The Taiwan Christian Lutheran Evangelical Church began in 1971. Hong Kong church workers were sent to Taiwan to preach the gospel and build churches. This pioneering period lasted seven years; three churches were established during this time.
In December 1978, WELS started sending missionaries directly to Taiwan. At one time, up to seven WELS missionaries were working in Taiwan. Through the efforts of missionaries, the churches in Taiwan have been receiving pure Lutheran teaching for the past 50 years.
In order to train and teach local Taiwanese people, a Bible college was established for fellow Christians who were eager to learn and serve in the ministry. Those who were trained and studied at the Bible college became local pastors and church leaders. They also established new churches in different areas of Taiwan.
In July 2019, the Taiwan church became a sister church of WELS. In May 2021, Taiwan Lutheran Church formally became a member of CELC.
